The tradition of wearing waistbeads originated among the tribes of West Africa hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years ago and has endured through different generations to become a worldwide practice.

Our brand name, Pelumi, is short for “Oluwapelumi” which is a Yoruba word that means, “God is with me.” Pelumi Waistbeads are created as a way for women to express their femininity as God’s beautiful creation.

Women today wear waistbeads for several reasons, some of which are:

• As an adornment to enhance the waist
• As a means of celebrating and/or remembering milestone moments
• As a visual reminder of intentions or goals deliberately assigned to them
• As a way to track or monitor fluctuations in weight that are a normal part of being woman
